Just Between Friends of Visalia

I have heard a whisper about Just Between Friends awhile back. It looked liked a giant yard sale to me. But I'm a dude and I don't really care about 2nd hand kid clothes. My wife is involved in it this year and she actually took me to it. And it is a giant yard sale.
But wait there's more - they don't accept any crap. It all has to be stain free clothes and good shape. The toys, baby furniture and equipment must all be in working order. There are some nice stuff there.
Most of it caters to woman and stuff they need to run a household filled with children of all ages. There are also movies, music, small and large furniture, bikes, hand held GPS unit, games and tons of strollers.
I wondered why they called it Just Between Friends and I got my answer. If you take part and donate your time to running the event you get in at exclusive hours and get first shot at all the great stuff.
It is open to the public now September 11 -17. They have a website and a Facebook page. Check it out.

Visalia's Habit Burger is Crazy Busy

So I went for my walk. Lucky for me Habit Burger is near by. I went around lunch time on a Saturday and apparently that's a formula for being crazy busy. The drive-in was wrapped around the building and out into to street. People filled all the seats and lined up out the door. I love burgers and fries but not that much. I took some shots and kept walking.

Visalia's Historic Mearle's Drive-In is Transformed into Habit Burger

Mearle’s College Drive-In's 70-year-old history has a new chapter. Even though the structure is most widely known for as Mearle's. It has not been it's one and only name. It was once known as Tad's and later it became D's. Though Visalia has known the restaurant as Mearle's the longest, Visalia needs to say good bye. Hopefully Visalia will embrace more change and release the past. The plan is to drop by and try a burger and fries. I've heard good things about their community presence but nothing about their food. There must be something about them. They do have 40 restaurants in California and Arizona. But by that logic there are a bazillion McDonalds and I can't stomach their hamburgers anymore. Still love Micky Ds fries. There is just something about them. So that is all until I try their food. I hope they are not crazy busy and stuff. That would just suck.

Where to get a Tattoo in Visalia

I met ODIE online through Twitter. He seemed like an interesting dude form just his Tweets. He's even more in person. I walked into Outskirts Tattoo for our meeting and music was blasting like it was a party. Greeting me were tattooed and pierced individuals. In a tattoo shop, you ask? I know. I told them I was there to meet with ODIE and they pointed me to the far corner were he was working on Dianna Chamberlain's back tattoo in memoriam to her grandparents. Her mother was there and had just finished her matching tattoo.

It was cool to sit in and watch and talk to them and ODIE. I listened to them talk about how they met ODIE and the reason for their tattoo. Every element of the tattoo had a specific meaning for them. It's true what they say that ever tattoo has some kind of story behind it.

ODIE is one of the most interesting people I've met in a long time. His life as a tattoo artist has allowed him to meet celebrities and has taken him across America. He has so meany stories to share. It was my pleasure to have met him.

Dine Out Visalia

Throughout Visalia, a celebration of local restaurants will be held Monday, July 11, as we participate in a national search for the best small-town food in America. We received the second-highest number of votes in the first phase of the Best of the Road contest sponsored by Rand McNally and USA TODAY. Visalia is one of six finalists in the contest's best-food category.

Now, a road rally is under way to promote American tourism and small-town pride. Five teams of volunteer judges are driving across America to visit finalists. We’re preparing to welcome Jim and Bonnie Parr, of St. Petersburg, Fla., to enjoy a full day of touring Visalia’s abundant selection of local restaurants, attractions, and agri-tourism businesses.

Visalia needs culture and Visalians should support anyone who tries to bring it to the valley. Proceeds of the event presented by The Fourth Wall Theater Company will given to a HIV/AIDS charity.

Books for Prisons

The purpose of Books for Prisons is to facilitate and provide recreational and instructional books, magazines and other materials to various groups and organizations.

I love to read, not as much as I like to write stories though. I appreciate those who do love to read because I sit at this lap top creating stories for people just like that. So, thanks. But what I want to share with you is this great group in Visalia called Books for Prisons. They take unwanted books that would be otherwise dumped in a landfill and forgotten and put them in the hands for men and women who desperately want something to read.
If you ever been bored, you know what it's like to crave something, anything to pass the time. They do a lot but they can do so much more. How can they achieve that? Time. Money. Volunteers. It's the same story for all NPOs. But if you have a passion for books or helping those in prison. Please consider contributing to Books for Prisons.

Howie and Sons Pizza Minus Pizza and Add Beer

I saw in a lovely tweet today for @HowieandSonsPza (visalia) that if you buy a pint you get a copy of Celebrator magazine. I love beer and free stuff so I was off like a prom dress. I love that it's within walking distance, but it was getting late, so I drove. I am no beer connoisseur by any means but I love good beer. They were fiddling with the pull stick thing-a-ma-bob when I walked in. I waited patiently for them to finish as I began to take in the atmosphere. Nice sociable people I sat with. We started talking about beer.

Like I said, I am no beer connoisseur. I don't know the lingo or brands or nothing. I just love beer. So, when I say we start talking isn't very true. It was more like I sat and listened with wide eyed amazement at all the information and name dropping that occurred. It was awesome. Everyone new more than me and I loved it. I want to learn more about craft beers. Howie and Sons is a great place to enjoy incredible beers and excellent conversation.

The Frosted Muffin

I took my oldest daughter, Abigail, to The Frosted Muffin at 108 S. Church, Visalia. We walked into a small waiting space made smaller with tables set beside the window for those who want to stay and eat. The counter and display cases are painted black. I saw that and thought edgy, dark goth mini cakes of death. But the ladies that buy boxes and boxes of these cupcakes are far from that lifestyle and from the people I saw behind the counter, so are they. This is soccer mom, church every Sunday unless you are at the coast or up in the cabin country. I am sure they will repaint or soften the harsh contrast. I am sure newborns love the black and white room. Maybe that’s their angle. Come for the cupcakes, stay for your baby to be mesmerized.

For your first trip, you will have to take what is available. The menu changes everyday with three special flavors and some that are made daily: Cinnamon Red Velvet, Vanilla Butter, Black and White (like the store front), Triple Chocolate and Psychedelic. I came on a day when they premiered a cupcake not available previously, called the Banana Dipped Chocolate. The most memorable thing about it for me and Abby is that we could taste frosting and banana. It had a banana chunk inside the center. That was cool. The cupcake was sweet, too sweet for me. I actually like my cupcakes without frosting. Weird, I know.

Over all, I don’t get the color scheme. I think it contradicts the fanciness of the cupcakes. They are very pretty. Despite the beauty and fanciness it was still just a cupcake and a cupcake ain’t worth $2.50 or $3. Will Visalia be able to support a cupcake shop for long? I would be very interested to see if it can.
