Midtown Sports
I've been told by unreliable sources that above what is now Midtown Sports was a car showroom. The big door you see above the sign was the entrance to get the cars in.

Visalia Opera Company presents Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro
For its second full
production, Visalia Opera Company presents Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro
November 8-10th at the Main Street Theatre in downtown Visalia!
Tickets
Many opera-lovers would name Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) as their favorite opera. It appeals to the most intellectual listener, but also to music-lovers seeking great melodies and ensembles and to those seeking only entertainment. One of three operas by Mozart, it represents one of the pinnacles not just of operatic but of human achievement.
Figaro, a servant to Count Almaviva, is ready to settle down and marry his beloved Susanna. All varieties of problems—a Count with a roving eye, an unpaid debt, an amorous young pageboy, and missing parents—make this one of the craziest days seen on the operatic stage!
Performances are Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9 at 7pm, with a matinee Sunday, November 10 at 2:30pm.
Performed in Italian with English supertitles.

Crazy White Boy
I guess I haven't been out and about in a while. I was recently at Walgreen's on Court when I happened upon this tag. I've seen tags around town and they are mostly scribbles but this guy, CWB, took his time. I liked it for it's artistic value. He still wrote on someone's property but he did it well.

Sign of the Times
Driving through a neighborhood West of Chinowth and North of 198, I came across this house with my wife. As soon as I saw it, I let out an expletive. It is as amazing as you may think it is. Tons of signs and they are not junky looking. Someone cares about these signs and makes sure each one is in tip top shape.

Loud Mouth Poetry Jam
The competition’s structure is as innovative as it is creative. Five judges are randomly chosen from members of the audience and score on a one-to-ten, bias-free system. The participants are judged upon their visual and oral delivery as well as the poem’s content. Poets then have 3 minutes to make themselves heard, with one point deducted for each ten seconds that the poem exceeds that limit. The next poetry slam will be at Howie and Sons Pizza on March 22, with the doors opening at 6 p.m., open mic at 6:30 p.m., and the main event beginning at 7 p.m., and subsequent slams will be held there on the fourth Friday of each month. It is $5 to either watch or compete, or $3 with a student ID.

The Altar
What is going on in Visalia? I was going to Grocery Outlet for some soda and what nots, when I happened to pass this altar. The candles were lit and everything. I haven't a clue if the rest of the things were apart of it or added later but it does seem odd either way.

Visalia Sofa Art XVIII
|
Artwork Entries Due: Saturday, February 2nd
Sofa Art returns in all its glory for
the eighteenth consecutive year with yet another fun theme: The Sofa
Art Time Machine: A Trip Through Art History. With this year's theme,
we ask participating artists to leaf back through the pages of their
favorite art history books, or perhaps the Google Art Project, for a
little inspiration. Of course, this is a Sofa Art show, and it goes
without saying that this is art "about the sofa," not to "complement the
sofa" and all artworks must include the obligatory couch, davenport,
recliner, day bed, divan, etc. Just use your imagination and have a
little fun. As always, the Sofa Art exhibition is open to all artists,
and non-artists alike, with no entry fee for artwork submissions.
Simply deliver your artwork to Arts Visalia by the Entry Deadline
described below.
The exhibition will run from February 6th through March 1st. An opening reception
will be held Friday, February 8th from 6 to 8 pm. Attendance
is free and open to the public.
For the second straight year, Arts
Visalia will partner will Pro-Youth/HEART as a part of the Sofa Art
experience, with a special artwork auction event to be held on the
evening of Friday, February 15th. Called Art for HEART, this second
reception will auction off a selection of Sofa Artworks made specially
for the exhibition by supporters of Pro-Youth's exceptional after-school
programs throughout Tulare County.
The first Sofa Art Show was held in 1996 as
a playful response to an unflattering depiction of Visalia’s
local art scene as described by a local newspaper writer. Sofa
Art Co-Founder Varian Mace, then an art instructor at College
of the Sequoias, shared the article with her classes and challenged
them to make some “real sofa art” in response. The
resulting exhibition was a hit, to say the least, and has been
an annual Visalia tradition ever since.
All artists, and, again, non-artists, are invited
to submit their creations. Entry forms may be picked up at Arts
Visalia or online at www.artsvisalia.org. Artwork submissions
must be delivered to Arts Visalia by Saturday, February 2nd.
A dedicated artwork delivery session is scheduled for Saturday,
February 2nd from Noon to 3pm.
For more information, contact Arts Visalia
at (559) 739-0905 or info@artsvisalia.org.
